Penzance Chamber of Commerce has been in existence for over 100 years making it the oldest Chamber in the County. It has around 150 members and Causewayhead Traders Association, Penzance and District Tourism Association and the Harbour Traders Association are all Associate Members of the Chamber of Commerce. This means that we effectively represent somewhere in the region of 350 local businesses.
Mike Waters, a professionally qualified Health & Safety Practitioner, was elected Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce in the year 2000 and he has been re-elected every year since. He is also Chairman of the Economy Group of the Penzance and Area Market & Coastal Towns Initiative (MCTi).
We believe that everything that affects the local community also has an impact upon business, to that end we involve ourselves in every aspect of local life from campaigning for the improvement in services at West Cornwall Hospital to local housing issues.
A major success this year has been the implementation of the Penzance Shoppers Loyalty Card Scheme which was devised by the Chairman and launched with the support of Penwith District Council. The scheme has proven to be very successful with 95 businesses signed up to the scheme and over 9500 Loyalty Cards issued to members of the public. The scheme was initially funded by the Council so that it is free both to businesses and the public. All businesses in the scheme have reported an increase in both footfall and trade as a result of their participation in the scheme. In addition the following towns have requested details of the scheme and the majority have started the same scheme in their localities: Hayle; Helston; St Ives; St Ives (Cambs); Bassetlaw (Notts); Prestatyn (Wales); Holsworthy (North Devon); St Austell; Dursley (East Midlands) and the London Borough of Islington. Any other towns wanting details of the scheme should contact Mike Waters whose details are elsewhere on this page.
The Chamber meets on the first Tuesday of every month (except August) at 7.30pm in the Penzance and Newlyn Rugby Club, Alexandra Road, Penzance. Our meetings are open to the general public and everyone is welcome to attend whether a member or not and whether running a business or not.
