With the UK Government being the first government globally to declare a climate emergency it is more important than ever that businesses aim to contribute to getting our environment back on track. A new search engine at the forefront of providing search engine services while contributing to the resolution of the climate crisis is Ecosia. Ecosia has a fairly similar interface to Google and uses the money made from ads to support charities to plant trees; not only benefiting the environment but people and local economies too. On average one tree is planted for every 45 searches; their website also has a live counter to show how many trees they have planted to date. Ecosia is completely transparent with its finances and produce monthly reports to show its users exactly where the income generated from searches goes; they are also CO2 neutral and their “servers run on 100% renewable energy, and every search request removes 1kg of CO2 from the atmosphere.”

Since being founded in 2009, Ecosia hit its 25 million tree milestone in 2018. The company is simultaneously building its own solar energy plant to power every search each user makes.
