Why Cornwall Chamber of Commerce is supporting Small Business Saturday

With Small Businesses Saturday just around the corner, the Chamber wants to express just how important shopping local is to our economy.

Did you know that small businesses make up 88% of Cornwall’s 25,000 of VAT registered businesses? There is an estimated further 35,000 sole traders and non-VAT registered businesses in the Cornwall alone.  A large majority the Chamber’s membership falls within this bracket.

With the uncertainties of what will happen to Cornwall’s economy surrounding Brexit, now more than ever before it is important to support our local businesses. Many small businesses in Cornwall have limited budgets to protect themselves if economic or new tax pressures cause a direct impact to sales, which is a hotbed for innovation and creativity.

As a Chamber of Commerce, Cornwall Chamber is an ambassador of #ShopLocal, and we do everything we can to use products and services within the Duchy to keep the money within the local economy. We prioritise our membership, the majority of which is locally based.

There is no doubt about it, Cornwall is home to the most beautiful landscape but also to delightful, innovative and pioneering products made here in Cornwall and we should take advantage of this, especially running up to Christmas. At the Chamber, we believe that pennies and pounds spent in Cornwall are more likely to stay and support the local economy instead of ending up somewhere where it may not so valuable.

Buying local is also more sustainable, with so much buzz around keeping Cornwall green and protecting our much-loved county. Surely the fewer ‘product miles’ we make and the less packaging we use, the better? The Chamber believes we should invest in the community we live in and support the thriving creative communities, Christmas markets and small businesses up and down the county.
