Achieving affordable low-carbon housing in practice – new build and retrofit.
Energy efficient design means more energy for the national grid.
Experts from Cardiff University have designed and built the UK’s first purpose-built, low-cost energy smart house, capable of exporting more energy to the national electricity grid than it uses.
Designed and constructed as part of the Wales Low Carbon Research Institute’s (LCRI) SOLCER project, and supported by SPECIFIC at Swansea University, its unique design combines for the first time reduced energy demand, renewable energy supply and energy storage to create an energy positive house.
We will be joined on Wednesday 4 May by Dr Joanne Patterson, project manager on SOLCER, who will talk about the project, as well as some of the challenges and opportunities of retrofitting properties to achieve the same effect.
Over the past 17 years Jo’s research has aimed to provide evidence and understanding as to why low carbon is important from building to urban scale. Jo is particularly interested in stimulating the retrofit of the existing built environment. Her research has involved modelling energy use across different sectors of the built environment at an urban scale, investigating tools and frameworks for urban sustainability, retrofitting a social house to 80% carbon reductions, evaluating large scale social retrofit programmes, investigating the impact of the built environment on health and how schools can become more sustainable.
There will be an opportunity to network in small groups with colleagues from across the sector both before and after the talk
The event will run on Zoom and is interactive – please ensure you have a working camera and microphone to take part.
If you have any questions please get in touch. The team member running the session is Dani Farrow, University of Exeter Impact Partnership and Development Manager. Please feel free to share with friends or colleagues who think may be interested. This event is suitable for all levels of staff involved in the sector.
