• What type of networker are you?

Cornwall Chamber of Commerce holds an impressive number of some 70+ networking events annually. They are attended by all sorts of people, from new business owners looking to make new contacts, to seasoned leaders wishing to extend their network, knowledge and expertise.
There are essentially three main types of networking and a Chamber of Commerce breakfast or lunch is in the unique position of being used to address all three!

    Personal Networker

We like to consider our events closer to personal networking than any other model. Of course, they can be strategic and operational, but the business community in Cornwall is a friendly and welcoming group of people who give everyone the chance to engage and speak. Our community values what every person has to say, making it the ideal place for personal networkers to dip their toes into the world of networking.  Now, what makes a personal network powerful is its referral potential, but it is key not to go in for a hard sell here! See our top networking tips blog post here.

Personal networking is a crucial first step, which fosters a deeper understanding of yourself and your positioning within the business landscape, and we welcome newcomers and businesses of all shapes and sizes to our events.

    Operational Networker

This type of networking is favoured by leaders who are seeking the opportunity to resolve answers and complete tasks. As such, it is often used internally or for sector groups to meet and exchange information. Here in Cornwall, we have a rich variety of sector groups, from financiers to crafters and from manufacturers to retailers. Any delegation from any group may join us for Chamber breakfast or other events in order to catch up with their peers, whilst staying abreast of the news and views of the wider business community.
Our table hosts ensure that event those new to the networking scene are looked after and if there is a particular person you are hoping to meet and do business with, we will endeavour to introduce you or seat you on their table. Just let us know and we’ll do our best to arrange this for you.

    Strategic Networker

Strategic networking is the most time-consuming type of networking because it requires an ability to arrange exchange of information, support, and resources across the network to garner results for all. Strategic networkers look to the future and see the bigger picture, and at Chamber events these include our business partners and longstanding members, as well as some highly strategic newcomers.
The Chamber’s networking events are created strategically and we use a combination of indirect influence, direct talks and friendly chat to enrich the business community at large.

    Making it work for you

Contrary to what some people believe, the word “work” is part of networking, and despite the lovely food and drink on offer and the friendly conversation, it is not all easy work because it involves getting out of your comfort zone and presenting a professional and friendly image of your company at all times. Ideally you want to operate a combination of all three networking styles at any one event, which in itself results in you networking strategically.
Developing networks takes time and is not a quick fix solution. The key is making each element work for you, and most importantly remembering to have fun
Whilst all of these serve different purposes, they are not mutually exclusive and anyone from the business community in Cornwall may be addressing all three by attending a Chamber of Commerce event.
